Otaktay Red Cloud stared dispassionately as the Taurian Rifleman blew itself apart, though he couldn’t say whether it was his shot or that of the strangely modified New Syrtis Enforcer that had scored the killing blow. The taciturn young man was as grim in the face of his foe’s death as he would be in the face of his own; he took no joy in the killing nor did he fear his own demise. Death was simply a thing that happened, the only thing that mattered was meeting it well.

When the battalion’s ships had been struck in space by an attacker they could not hurt, when his company’s DropShip had crashed headlong into the unforgiving earth, Otaktay alone had been calm and in the face of his calm the universe had perhaps decided that it was not yet Otaktay’s time to die.

Relations between his people and the Capellan Confederation had been largely cold. Although the Confederation itself cared little what religious ceremonies the Lakota chose to practice; the tribe’s outright rejection of the Korvin Doctrine had long made the administration nervous. To the Lakota, the individual was still important. They refused to simply be subsumed by a centralized government; or to let the teachings of a five-thousand-year-old dead man dictate how one ought to behave.

The Sioux were a nation all their own; and while Confucius had said a great many things about a great many people; he had said very little of interest to the Lakota.

Otaktay suspected that were it not for Warrior House Dai Da Chi’s aggressive recruitment and the tribe’s propensity to join the military, Maximillian Liao would have grown tired of the tribe’s stubborn semi-independence. Otaktay himself had once been offered a chance to compete for an opening in Dai Da Chi but he’d turned the opportunity down so that his youngest brother might earn some honor. Even now, with his unit decimated, he did not regret his choice.

He twisted in the cockpit, feeling the comfortable weight of the traditional red sash tied around his waist. The end was anchored securely to a bolt he’d driven through the armored floor. The sash was a promise and a reassurance, like the needler pistols favored by the regular pilots of his command. Unlike those others, Otaktay carried no sidearm into battle: he had no intention of being shot out of his `Mech. He would remain on the field until all the enemy were dead. Or he was.

“Woah, definitely hostile!” Sergeant Peter Summers said as the azure whip of a PPC beam flashed perhaps a meter in front of his Blackjack. Dorian shook his head at the exclamation, though the heavy neurohelmet resting on his shoulders resisted the movement. His Watchman responded in kind, it’s wedge-shaped cockpit traversing back and forth in response to his neuro-impulses.

“What, you thought maybe they’d come to help us dig?” Incredulity crept into his wife’s voice.

“They could’ve been survivors, y’know? Our survivors, I mean,” Summers replied defensively.

Dorian sighed, squelching them with a thumb-press. “Call targets,” he said calmly. “And focus fire—”

“Two Milk Cartons with a PPC,” Anne called out as she leapt towards the base of a rocky bluff. “Calling primary. It’s slow as fuck for a light `Mech, should be an easy takedown.”

As if to punctuate her point, the Firebee’s pistol-like Large Laser flickered for an instant as it put a terawatt into a target he couldn’t see. Dorian leapt forward as she crowed exultantly.

“Roger, focus fire on the Toro if you can,” he acquiesced as the enemy `Mech swung into view. His own large laser flashed as the enemy `Mech retreated behing the bluffs. An instant later Peter’s PPCs filled the space it’d just vacated. “Do not pursue. Shift primary to—whatever the hell that blobby thing is.”
